Maritime Heritage Program: Endeavour II Island Sloop Frequently Asked Questions
Endeavour II is a 32-foot island sloop being built on Jost van Dyke. The Sloop Project’s goal is to pass viable modern boat building and sailing skills on to the youth of Jost Van Dyke and the BVI, while celebrating traditional seafaring heritage. BVI and Caribbean history is intrinsically linked to the sea, upon which its islands have relied for sustenance and commerce. The sloop project re-connects Jost van Dykes with its past, which is firmly rooted in our society’s ability to meet the challenges and opportunities offered by the sea through their energy, skill, and innovation.

Q: What type of boat is Endeavour II?
A: Endeavour II is a JVD 32, the first wooden island sloop built on Jost van Dykes in modern memory. Endeavour II has lines and characteristics of traditional work sloops, but has been updated using modern methods for safety, capacity, sailing range and durability in order to meet our goals for education and demonstration.
Q: Once built, how will Endeavour II be used?
A:
- Sail Training/Maritime Skills Programme for local school children
- On-board Marine and Coastal Environmental Education Programmes
- Cultural Exhibitions and Demonstrations for islanders and visitors
- Day Sail Charters to help create revenue to pay for the sloop’s upkeep
- To continue to develop valuable job skills for local youth in the marine industry and elsewhere
- To serve as the island’s flagship for competition in regattas in the BVI and ‘down-island’
Q: Who is building Endeavour II?
A: While helping to rekindle the islands’ maritime heritage, the Sloop Project has simultaneously served as an educational platform for island youth. High School students have built Endeavour II under the guidance of an experienced local captain. Modern tools and construction techniques have provided student with useful job skills.
Q: Who is paying for this project?
A: The Jost van Dykes Preservation Society has coordinated funding for this project. Mostly, the project has relied on the private donations of our visitors. JVDPS still needs to raise additional funds to complete Endeavour II, and has established a sister 501c3 non-profit in the U.S. to provide U.S. tax-payers with the benefit of making tax-deductible contributions to the project. We welcome donations large and small, and we also sell t-shirts to help fund the project. Donation rewards are available, which include sailing excursions on Endeavour II, once she is launched.
Q: When is the launch date?
A: We hope to launch Endeavour II in late May 2008, in time for Foxy’s Wooden Boat Regatta. The completion of the sloop and its subsequent launch are dependent upon available funds.
Q: What is the Jost van Dykes Preservation Society?
A. The Jost van Dykes Preservation Society is a private BVI not-for-profit organization dedicated to environmental, cultural and historical preservation on Jost van Dykes and surrounding out-islands. Foxy Callwood is the founder and Chairman of the Board. The Maritime Heritage Programme is the Society’s first major project. JVDPS also works in land caretaking on Sandy Cay and is pursuing funding from individuals, corporations and foundations for other environmental, cultural and historical projects on Jost van Dykes. In mid November 2007, JVDPS opened a small office on Great Harbour. Visitors are welcome to visit the office and/or sloop project to learn more about our preservation efforts.
